Some say it comes from the Lenape word punkwsutenay, which means “town of the mosquitoes”, while other say it stems from the work putschisktey, which means “poison vine”.
Punxsutawnety’s economic roots lie in soft bituminous coal, brick and glass factories, railroad repairs, and meat packing. Today the economy is spurred by healthcare, manufacturing, and the gas/oil industry.
Without a doubt, the town is most famous for its Groundhog Day celebration! Every February 2nd at 6 a.m. since 1886, Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his slumber at Gobbler’s Knob to predict 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring based on his shadow. With the release of the movie ‘Groundhog Day’, the area has drawn crowds of 10,000 and more. Residents and visitors can also enjoy Brunch with Phil himself, the Groundhog Ball, a virtual 5k, and a celebration in the Punxsy’s main square downtown.
